Managing Risk

Reducing the risk of serious injury and death on playground and playground equipment can be achieved by the following:

  • Adequate supervision
  • Purchasing of SANS complaint playground equipment
  • Regular maintenance of playground equipment

  • Purchasing of SANS complaint playground equipment
  • Providing a soft fall or impact safety surface underneath and around playground equipment
  • Regular safety inspections of playground equipment

Yearly or Annual Inspections

Child care providers or practitioners are legally required to conduct risk and safety assessments of the environments which children will be exposed to in their care. This includes all areas of the premises and playground equipment.

Yearly safety audits of the child's environment are required by law to be conducted annually. A record of the safety audit must be kept for a period of five years.

Annual playground equipment safety audits and inspections must be conducted by certified playground safety professional. Audits conducted by anybody other than a certified playground safety professional or inspector will result in litigation in the event of serious injury or death of a child if there was an oversight or failure to identify serious hazards or risks on playground equipment inspected. Prison sentences or heavy fines may be imposed.  It is not advisable to conduct these safety audits yourself or by unqualified persons.

The annual safety inspection or safety audit will check for compliance with the South African National Standard for playgrounds and playground equipment

Routine Safety Inspections

Playgrounds and playground equipment should be inspected daily prior to allowing children onto the equipment. These basic inspections must be conducted by a competent person or by a person trained by the Playground Safety Institute.

Contact the Playground Safety Institute to arrange for training to be conducted on site for group staff training with more than ten students or look at the dates the public course are being conducted and book a place.

Operational Maintenance  Inspections

Monthly or quarterly maintenance inspections must be conducted by maintenance contractors who have been certified and trained by the Playground Safety Institute. Implementing a maintenance pro gramme for your playground equipment increases the life span of the playground  equipment.

Note

Special playground inspection probes are used for audits and inspections. Make sure your playground safety inspector has a set of these probes.

Your playground safety inspector must provide you with a calibration certificate for inspection probes used in the auditing of your playground equipment.
